Planned Downtime on Thursday, February 4th
February 2, 2010, 11:50 am - Valve - General Announcement
Beginning at 6:00 pm Pacific time Thursday February 4th, we will be performing software maintenance on some Steam servers. We expect the resulting downtime to last three hours at most, putting the end of the window at 9:00 pm Pacific time.
Some Steam services will be offline during this time. Affected services will include the Steam Community, in-game matchmaking or lobbies, downloading games from Steam content servers, and making purchases from the Steam store. Games that do not rely on Steam matchmaking services should remain playable.

Map and Level Disconnects
We've all experienced it, timeouts and disconnects at map end (DODS , TF2) or in the L4D safe room . Its been theorized that the culprit is the sending of information to the Steam game stats. Nephyrin has released a Source Meta Mod plugin that blocks this process and therefore should stop the disconnects.
The plugin is installed on DODS, TF2, and L4D servers. Please let me know if this fixes the problem for you.

The Orange Box -- the collection of new stuff from Valve that includes Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2 -- is available for pre-order through Steam. Steamer (no relation) had posted this link in the forum earlier, but I thought a few of you might have missed it.
If you pre-order, you will be able to play TF2 beta starting Monday, Sept. 17th. The Orange Box is about US $50, but includes all the games above.
There is another bit of news that may be of interest. The "Orange Box games" will all use an updated Source engine. This is no minor update. The new "Orange Box" source engine includes multi-core processor support. There are also indications that DODS will be converted to the new engine, although the information about that seems somewhat mixed.
SunLit will, of course, have a TF2 server up and running on day one. Rosie has been working on getting it ready for a few days.

Rumours were unfounded.
"Regarding Reports of Security Breach in Steam
There has been no security breach of Steam. The alleged hacker gained access to a third party site that Valve uses to manage the commercial partners in its cyber cafe program. This cyber cafe billing system is not connected to Steam.
We are working with law enforcement agencies on this matter, and encourage anyone with more information to email us at Catch_A_Thief@valvesoftware.com. "

Valve has added a new cvar (client-side setting). The default setting for this cvar prevents game servers from executing any console commands on your PC.
It sounds like a good idea, I know, but it prevents our server administration plugin from doing simple things like popping up a menu on your screen. Because of this, we recommend you execute the following command to override it:
cl_restrict_server_commands 0
****IMPORTANT****
You will not be able to see any Mani Admin menus in game unless you add this cvar to your config or simply execute it once in the console. This includes the end round votemap map menu and the TK forgive menu.

Kicked for Illegal Alias Error
The latest Steam update has added a clientside cvar
Source Engine
* Added new cl_restrict_server_commands to prevent unwanted commands being run on game clients. The default value is 1, valid settings are:
o 0 = Don't restrict any server commands
o 1 = Restrict server commands in Valve multiplayer games
o 2 = Restrict server commands in all multiplayer games
Sounds like a good idea but , players entering a server with CALenforce and/or CALibrate may be "kicked by console for using an illegal alias".
That doesnt mean a secret identity ;)
It indicates that your config is blocking the calenforce/cvarx plugins from editing your cfg to "legal" values.
So you have two options at the moment
1) type in console before you join server cl_restrict_server_commands 0
2) play on servers that do not use the CALenforce/cvarx plugins.
We have disabled the cvar consistency plugins on the Annex MOTW till this can be sorted out

If you are getting kicked with an error message that "This Steam account does not own this game," be aware that this is not a problem with the SunLit servers.
It is some sort of problem with Valve's Steam network. It is happening to users all over the place, including CS:S servers.
There does not seem to be anything either players or server operators can do to fix it.
There's a thread about it over on the steam forums, so I'm sure Valve is aware of it and working on it. You can find more info here.

Steam has updated itself several times in the last couple of weeks.
Yesterdays updates were very lengthy, with many people stalling out at 30% or loading very slowly. Not a big update just buggy install. The Steam Forums are full of reported errors.
It would be prudent for the SLDL teams to make sure that their players have updated Steam well before the matches and confirm that tonight's rosters can all connect.
***UPDATE*** 5:30pm est
STEAM has released another update fixing the disconnect problems of last night.
